The city's first park was given its name because it was the place where the Chautauqua programs were staged from 1906 until 1931.  It wasa gathering place for families in special events or tent camping.

Chautauqua's facilities include a band shell that was built as a Works Progress Administration project during the great depression of the 1930's and is lovingly maintained with seating for Wednesday night summer band concerts.

Many picnic tables provide enough space for large families or groups.

The shelterhouse is large and includes a kitchen area with a gas grill, running water, electric lights and electrical outlets. The shelterhouse is available by RESERVATION only.

Parks provide places for children and families to unwind and have fun in a city. Parks, also, counteract the effect that the city concrete and asphalt streets and buildings have on peoples peace of mind and serenity. Parks have a "decongestant" value to the mental health of a community. Worthington is blessed with having many parks. Especially valuable are the many parks by Lake Okabena where there are  many places to go to "let the stress out" and re-create our serenity and composure in a hussle-bustle world.
